In April of 2022 the Eastland Complex fires swept through Western Texas. Four fires burned more than 54,000 acres. “Everywhere you turn, it looks like a bomb went off. I’ve seen this place up in smoke before, but never quite like this” said Carbon resident Wendy Forbus. 86 homes were destroyed in Carbon with a population of 226 people. A few towns over, Second Baptist Church was demolished. Nelda Rodgers, a fourth generation church parishioner, closed her eyes while singing songs of worship during a service across the street of the former church. “I know it’s a building, but it’s also memories” said Rodgers.
